In March 2004, a North Carolina soldier, Samuel W. Lynch, became one of a small number of soldiers who have been deployed to Iraq even though they filed as conscientious objectors. While he was in Iraq, Lynch joined other U.S. troops during security and humanitarian missions, but he remained unarmed and worked as a medic.
