Vets to Detractors: We'd Love to Testify Under Oath

Email This

Moments ago, Former US Army Captain Luis Montalvan who served two tour of Iraq addressed the protesters of Winter Soldier.  In response to their statements that Winter Soldier vets should testify under oath, he (and several other members of the panel) said they would jump on the opportunity.  Kristofer Goldsmith said he'd do so "on a stack of bibles".

After Winter Soldier 1971, the proceedings were read into the congressional record and the Senate Foreign Relations committee held hearings that gave vets an opportunity to testify under oath.  The question now is whether Congress will offer this opportunity.

The key committees are the House and Senate Foreign Relations and the House and Senate Armed Services committee.  The chair of each committee makes the call.  Jeff Key, of Iraq Veterans Against the War, is leading the lobbying effort.

1971 Winter Soldier

The 1971 WSI testimony read into the CR was all unsworn. The only vet allowed to testify before Fulbright's Committee was John Kerry, and he was not placed under oath either. That unsworn WSI testimony did allow the1971 testifiers to retract statements made and refuse to cooperate with investigations of charges without facing penalties like perjury and obstruction.

As to giving vets a voice, another Vietnam Veterans organization, the Vietnam Veterans for a Just Peace requested that they be given an opportunity to testify before Fulbright's committee with a view different than that of Kerry and the VVAW - and they were denied the opportunity to do so.
